DO YOU NEED A CANOE SEAT?

That depends! If sitting for long periods of time on a firm surface is uncomfortable, then a canoe seat may be for you. If you’re comfortable sitting on a firm surface ( think school desk chair) for a while, then you can probably leave the seat behind.

When it comes to canoe seats, the options can seem overwhelming. A canoe seat can be as simple as a foam cushion (similar to a garden kneeling pad) or be more complex with straps, pockets, and backrests. A word of caution regarding canoe seats with backrests; no canoe seat is meant to be reclined in while paddling. Not only is it bad paddling posture for efficiency, it can also lead to sore muscles because you aren’t engaging your core correctly. Reclining can also add wear to your canoe seat and cause frames to bend and straps to break.

When considering canoe seats important to look at the following:

  • What is it made of? - Seats made of light weight and sturdy material are best.

  • Straps and Stitching - Make sure that they will hold up. You don’t want to lug around a seat that breaks on the first day.

  • How much cushion do you want? - Some seats are firmer than others, make sure the seat you choose gives you the comfort you need.

  • How much does it cost? - Cheap seats can often be just as good as expensive ones. Cheap, low quality seats can also be the downfall of a trip. Look at reviews and try out options to weigh just how much a canoe seat can be worth to you.

If you can, try out the canoe seat before purchasing. Even just sitting on one in the store can give you a better idea of how it will work on a trek. Our Swamp Base Preaux Staff recommendation (should you opt for a seat) is the GCI SitBacker Canoe Seat. It is both comfortable and sturdy for most participants.
