It is important to find ways to protect the gear that you value. Sure, this can be buying a super durable dry bag to ensure that you can use it for years to come. However, its often the little things that we aren't thinking about. Things like waterproof phone cases are a great idea. Purchasing a waterproof phone case with a strap ensures that you can still get pictures of the scenery and wildlife without risking your phone.
Do you have prescription glasses or sunglasses? You will want a strap for those; Ray-Bans don't float.
Bringing your favorite knife? Tie a cool paracord knot to it and hook it on a carabiner.
Taking a little cash and your driver's license? Wrap it in a Ziplock and put it all the way at the bottom of your dry bag.
This isn't to discourage you from bringing nice things. Heck! Our Base Director, Ben Pierce, goes out with a telescope of a camera lens all the time... It is just a reminder to take measures to protect the things that are expensive/ important to you. No one wants to go home after a great week at Swamp Base and have lost an item that is going to hurt to replace.
