TAKE YOUR FIRST AID KIT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Swamp Base provides a first aid kit carried by the trek guide for trek crews, however a crew first aid kit is required on our packing list as well. This is to allow crews to meet personal needs and provide Scout rendered first aid when necessary. It is a great idea to sit down with your crew to research common first aid concerns for a swamp paddle,
and create a customized list of what your crew wants in their kit.
Everyone has unique needs and preferences, but here are some of what our Preaux Staff suggest to include in your crew first aid kit to take it to the next level of Swamp Base High Adventure comfort and preparedness.

Cooling towel: Summer days in Louisiana can/will be hot. A cooling towel is a great tool for an individual who might be in the early stages of dehydration and/or heat exhaustion to quickly lower their body temperature. This doesn’t have to be saved for emergencies only though. If any member of the crew is just feeling overheated, it can be a great way to lift spirits and get a crewmate feeling better.
Aloe vera: One of the most common reasons a participant can be pulled off the trail is for sunburn. Though this is preventable, a young Scout can easily forget to reapply sunscreen. A bottle of aloe vera can help ease a mild case of sunburn.
Mole Skin: Even though we are not a hiking trail, your hands and feet can stay wet for long periods of time. Mole skin can help when hot spots get started.
Boudreaux’s Butt Paste: While this doesn’t sound like something you’d want; a little bottle can go a long way for those who chafe. It is also a great remedy for heat rash, which can happen when you wear your life jacket for prolonged periods of time. Our preaux staff is fond of the pastes or stick varieties of anti-chafeing products. The powders, in our experience, wash off quickly when you get wet. (Gold Bond’s powder, stick, and/or ointment work great also.)
These are just a few items, but we always encourage units to bring whatever first aid gear they feel is necessary.
