WHAT KIND OF SHOES SHOULD I WEAR?

One of the most popular questions we hear from crews preparing for the Swamp is, “What types of shoes should we wear?”
First, as a BSA program, closed-toed and closed-heeled are a must; no exceptions. After 10 seasons of swamp treks, we have found that bringing 2 pairs of shoes is really the best bet. As a paddling trail with the majority of your day on the water, your feet WILL be wet. So, a good water shoe is best for those portions of the day. Instances where you are paddling, swimming, getting in/out of your canoe are all times that you’ll want something that drains water and dries quickly. Teva, Merrell, Astral, Magellan, and others make great water shoes that will last long after your trek.
However, you’ll spend your overnights, layover day, and portages walking on land, and you’ll need something that gives you a little more protection. For those times, you’re looking for a shoe that laces and has a sturdy sole. The “Swamp Stomp” portage on your last day is famous for stealing loosely tied shoes with its mud that can act like a suction cup. Ideally, this is your pair of grass cutting shoes, but these can really be any shoe that is already used or is inexpensive.
Though you are welcome to bring a pair of hiking shoes if you prefer, they aren’t necessary and do not tend to dry quickly. The same goes for Jungle boots, they are just too cumbersome, hold water, and are generally inconvenient.
